Gati Bhedam: Subdividing the Akshara
In Carnatic laya theory,
Nadai (or
Gati) refers to the internal subdivision of time units within a single akshara (beat). While the outer metronomic tempo of the tala remains unwavering, the internal pulse shifts.
The Five Canonical Nadais:
- Tisra Nadai (3 subdivisions per akshara): Syllables: Tha - Ki - Ta
- Chatusra Nadai (4 subdivisions per akshara): Syllables: Tha - Ka - Dhi - Mi (the default standard in concerts)
- Khanda Nadai (5 subdivisions per akshara): Syllables: Tha - Ka - Tha - Ki - Ta
- Misra Nadai (7 subdivisions per akshara): Syllables: Tha - Ki - Ta - Tha - Ka - Dhi - Mi
- Sankeerna Nadai (9 subdivisions per akshara): Syllables: Tha - Ka - Dhi - Mi - Tha - Ka - Tha - Ki - Ta
Mastering transitions between nadais without accelerating or decelerating the fundamental beat is the hallmark of an accomplished laya vidwan.
