school The Architecture of Laya: Sapta Talas & Nadais

Rhythm in Carnatic music is governed by the Suladi Sapta Tala system established by Sri Purandara Dasa. Unlike uniform Western beats, Carnatic talas are cyclic structures (Avartanams) built from specific rhythmic limbs called Angas.

The Three Primary Angas:
  • Laghu (I): A downward beat (Tattu) followed by finger counts (Viral Ennikkai). Its count varies depending on the Jathi: Tisra (3), Chatusra (4), Khanda (5), Misra (7), Sankeerna (9).
  • Dhrutham (O): A beat followed by an open wave of the hand (Veechu), fixed at 2 aksharas.
  • Anudhrutham (U): A single downward beat without wave or counts, fixed at 1 akshara.
Popular Talas:
  • Adi Tala (Chatusra Jathi Triputa Tala): I4 + O + O = 4 + 2 + 2 = 8 aksharas. The undisputed monarch of concert talas.
  • Rupaka Tala: O + I4 = 2 + 4 = 6 aksharas (often kept as two beats and a wave in popular practice).
  • Misra Chappu: 7 aksharas counted as 3 + 2 + 2 or 1.5 + 2 beats.
  • Khanda Chappu: 5 aksharas counted as 2 + 3.
