The Science of 22 Shrutis & Frequency Stability
Classical Indian music recognizes 22 Shrutis (microtonal intervals) within a single octave, defined in ancient treatises from Bharata Muni's Natya Shastra to Sarangadeva's Sangita Ratnakara.
While Western 12-tone equal temperament divides an octave into 12 logarithmic intervals of 100 cents each, Carnatic intonation is based on natural harmonic ratios (Just Intonation) and dynamic microtonal inflection (Gamakas).
Acoustic Stability:
Maintaining steady pitch on Achala swaras (Shadjam and Panchamam) requires sustained breath control and auditory focus. Even subtle deviations of 5 to 10 cents can disrupt the tranquil resonance of the raga.
